Over the years we have offered and developed numerous programs that enable children to try new activities or develop their skills and bring them to new heights. Hands-on experience and critical thinking are central to these programs as well as the opportunity to try to learn new skills in different ways depending upon the UNIQUE learning styles and abilities of each child. Many of these programs are similar to our RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS, but in EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, the emphasis is on critical learning skills that have an impact on academic excellence.

We also invite parents and children to ask us to start a program or activity on any educational topic. When we have at least four children or adolescents who are interested, we make the effort to find out when, where and how we can do it. We have offered visits to wall street executives to discuss business and entrepreneurial endeavors, visits by attorneys, carpenters, and computer programmers to teach informative, helpful or advanced knowledge about their professions. We have enabled also students to meet their peers from different backgrounds, religions and cultures through exchange programs. Mohonk was also the first organization in the United States to enable children in different countries to communicate with each other in real time through the internet. THAT was in 1988!

Some courses have been designed with schoolteachers in an effort to apply what they have learned in classrooms to the “real world.” For instance, chemistry and biology classes have been combined to test and assess pollution, contaminants, and microbes in Long Island Sound, local lakes, and streams.

We encourage teachers and parents to contact us about upcoming programs or projects they may have in mind and are of interest to them. We will consider them and support them financially. We also encourage volunteers to offer their expertise in any area of interest. Retirees are golden.
