Parent, Family, Individual Therapy

These programs have been part of Mohonk’s backbone for over four decades. They are based upon methods that include both behavioral cognitive methods and behavioral modification. However, critical thinking and first-hand experience in applying has been learned is  central.

Such a brief description of our approach is limited by the very words used to describe what we do. Our methods have a common focus in that they are directly related to  the way our brains learn, apply the goals desired, and integrate past experiences.  For instance, when parents are at a loss about how to control their child, we ask questions ad infinitum. The goal is for the parents to evaluate their situation from their individual perspectives and their child’s perspective with not a wink of judgement.  As parents Our approach is based upon what we call  brain-based methods.

We do both individual and group meetings. The most popular groups  include parent support groups. Some are of a general nature although we join parents together who have at least some common themes. “When does discipline work and when does it get on the way.”  “How does communication work effectively and have a reach that is real and lasts?” Twice each yar the subjects might change based upon requests and what we offer.

Our primary focus for  adolescents are those in grades 9-10. However, in the Fall, 2024 we will add another support group for adolescents in grades 6 to 8.

We also have groups that are orientated for parents of children who have ADHD, Learning Disabilities, or alcohol and drug problems. One interesting group is a bit unusual.  It is for parents of children who are  gifted and talented.  They pose some interesting concerns for parents and their children.  Mohonk was one of the fist organizations that offered such a group, and it was started in 1987.
