Parent, Family, Individual Therapy

These programs have been part of Mohonk’s backbone for over four decades. They are based upon what we call brain-based methods and incorporate aspects of many contemporary therapeutic practices. This includes cognitive behavioral therapy and behavioral modification among others, yet brain-based methods incorporate unique paradigms that relate to how the human brain actually functions.

The common denominator of brain-based methods is that they are based upon what we clearly and scientifically know about how our brains learn, apply the goals we desire and integrate past experiences. These methods are dynamic and lead individuals to take ownership of their behaviors because they want to, not because they “have to” and believe they can succeed because they have acutely, intensely and genuinely considered the pros and cons of choices they can make. Please read Chapter 1 of our heading called Mohonk’s Book for a detailed overview of our brain-based methods if you wish.

We offer both individual and group meetings. The most popular groups include parent support groups and adolescent support groups. We also have groups that are orientated towards parents of children who have ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder or alcohol and drug problems. One interesting group is a bit unusual. It is for children or parents of children who are gifted and talented. They pose some interesting concerns for parents and their children. Mohonk was one of the first organizations that offered such a group, and it was started in 1987. Some enterprising parents have requested other groups including bullying and sexual orientation as well as “When does discipline work and when does it get on the way.” “How does communication work effectively and have a reach that is real and lasts more than a month.” Mohonk has many professionals who can lead such groups if at least four individuals request it. Twice each year the subjects change based upon requests that are made.

Our primary focus has been for adolescents in grades 8-12. However, in the Fall, 2025 we will add support groups for parents and children in grades 2 – 7 if there are requests.
